Trends in Downwelling Longwave Radiance Over the Southern Great Plains

چکیده

Abstract Downwelling longwave radiation is an important part of the surface energy budget. Spectral trends in downwelling radiance (DLR) provide insight into radiative drivers climate change. In this research, we process and analyze a 23‐year DLR record measured by Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) at U.S. Department Energy Radiation Program Southern Great Plains (SGP) site. Two AERIs were deployed SGP with overlapping observation period about 10 years, which allows us to examine consistency accuracy measurements account for discrepancies between them due errors associated instruments themselves. We then analyzed all‐sky DLR, are warming trend during same also complex changes meteorological conditions. For instance, observed CO 2 absorption band follows closely near‐surface air temperature variations. The significant positive weak channels, such as wings channels H O vibration‐rotational band, show earlier detectability magnitude uncertainty mainly results from internal variability rather than measurement error, highlights importance continuing spectral unambiguously detect attribute

Observationally based evaluation of NWP reanalyses in modeling cloud properties over the Southern Great Plains

[1] This study evaluates three major Numerical-Weather-Prediction reanalyses (ERA-Interim, NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis I, and NCEP/DOE Reanalysis II) in modeling surface relative shortwave cloud forcing, cloud fraction, and cloud albedo. The observations used for this evaluation are decade-long surface-based continuous measurements of the U.S. Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program from 03/25...

The WRF nested within the CESM: Simulations of a midlatitude cyclone over the Southern Great Plains

[1] This paper describes an integrated modeling system in which the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) is nested within the Community Earth System Model (CESM). This system is validated for the simulation of a midlatitude cyclongesis event over the Southern Great Plains of the United States. The global atmospheric model CAM4 at T42 resolution in the CESM has missed this cyclogenesis, ...

The Statistical Formulations of Cloud Inhomegeneity Parameters Over the Southern Great Plains

Lack of data on cloud variability is one of the main reasons most current climate models consider clouds as plane-parallel, horizontally homogeneous combinations of cloudy and clear portions defined by cloud fraction. Accounting for cloud inhomogeneity should significantly increase the accuracy of calculations of radiative properties. Unique information on cloud internal variability can be obta...

Temporal Variations of Land Surface Microwave Emissivities over the ARM Southern Great Plains Site

Land surface microwave emissivities are important geophysical parameters for atmospheric, hydrological, and biospheric studies. This study estimates land surface microwave emissivity using an atmospheric microwave radiative transfer model and a combination of the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) satellite observations and data from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program Sout...
